Joachim Cooder has been a sought-after percussionist for two decades now, on now-legendary recordings with his father, Ry Cooder, such as the landmark Buena Vista Social Club sessions and on his own with artists like Mavis Staples, Dr. John and Ali Farka Touré, who inspired Cooder to take up African plucked instrument the mbira. He has produced albums for other artists and composed for film.

On his own, Joachim has released two albums, Love on a Real Train (2012) and Fuchsia Machu Picchu (2018); an EP of haunting instrumentals, We Can Talk from Different Waters (2020), and most recently, the NoneSuch Records release, Over That Road I’m Bound, featuring Joachim’s reimaginings of songs by country music pioneer Uncle Dave Macon.

For this concert, Joachim, who describes his music as electro-Congo-Bali blues, will be featured on electric mbira, tankdrum, keys and hand percussion. His band includes Vancouver's own Jeremy Holmes on bass, and Rayna Gellert on guitar, banjo and mandocello.

This event takes place at St. James Hall, 3214 W 10th Avenue, Vancouver. In partnership with Rogue Folk Club.
